Porous carbon monoliths for electrochemical removal of aqueous herbicides by “one-stop” catalysis of oxygen reduction and H2O2 activation

The overuse of herbicides has posed a threat to human health and the aquatic environment via DNA mutations antibiotic gene resistance. Carbon-based cathodic electrochemical advanced oxidation evolved as promising technology for herbicide degradation by generating hydroxyl radicals (•OH). However, conventional electro-Fenton process relies on interaction multiple species that adds system complexity cost narrows working pH range. Herein, series porous carbon monoliths (PCMs) were developed “one-stop” platform catalysis 2-electron ORR coupled with further catalytic reductive cleavage H2O2 produce •OH. A PCM prepared using 1,6-hexamethylene diamine (denoted PCM-HDA) produced at level was 374% higher than obtained commercially available black circum-neutral pH. Meanwhile, generated catalytically decomposed Based these results, PCM-HDA electrode achieved an 80 ± 2% napropamide in 60 min over range 4–10 mildly reducing potential, 69 TOC reduction condition 2 h. This simplified overcomes limitation electron-Fenton processes.
